Palmegiani Records Six RBIs in Doubleheader Split
4/29/2017 7:30:00 PM | Softball
Palmegiani finished with six RBIs on the day, including a grand slam and a pair of sacrifice flies. Brooke Imel, Lauren Watson, Demitra Burns and Sierra Miranda each collected a pair of hits on the day. Watson also led the team with three runs scored while Imel came across the plate twice.
South Dakota scored first in the opening game with four runs in the bottom of the second. The Mastodons responded right back in the top of the third to tie the game. Burns led off with a double and Jenna Balthazor reached on an error. Two outs later, Imel reached on a bunt single to load the bases for Palmegiani. On the very first pitch, Palmegiani deposited the ball over the left-center fence for a grand slam, and her second home run of the year.
The Coyotes broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run. Fort Wayne again answered back in the next half inning as Watson led off with a single. One out later, Imel singled to right field and went to third on an error by the right fielder, bringing home Watson. Palmegiani scored Imel on a sacrifice fly to left, putting the 'Dons in front for good.
Darby Shaw picked up the complete game victory on the rubber for the Mastodons, allowing five runs on seven hits, while striking out three.
It was a similar story to begin game two as the Yotes scored first with five runs in the bottom of the first before adding two more in the third.
Fort Wayne got on the scoreboard in the fifth as Caitlyn DeLong singled with one out to break up the no-hitter. Taylor Bolyard followed with a double to right-center, scoring DeLong from first. The 'Dons added another run in the sixth after back-to-back singles from Watson and Miranda to begin the inning. Palmegiani brought Watson home on a sacrifice fly.
Elizabeth Snodgrass started in the circle for the Mastodons, taking the loss after tossing 2 1-3 innings, while allowing seven runs on seven hits. Bailey Benefiel came on to throw the final 3 2-3 allowing just two hits.
Fort Wayne returns home for its final series of the season when it hosts IUPUI May 5-6. The doubleheader on May 5 will also be the Mastodon's annual Pink Out game to benefit the Vera Bradley Foundation.
