Fort Wayne Falls In League Opener To WIU 3-1

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Fort Wayne men's soccer dropped the Summit League opener to Western Illinois on Saturday (Sept. 23) evening 3-1 at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
The Mastodons went up 1-0 on a penalty kick by Keelan Barker in the 14th minute. WIU responded less than a minute later to tie it up and then went up 2-1 on a goal by Drew Whalen in the 36th minute.
The final nine minutes of the first half were played on field two after two light standards went out on field one. The game was resumed on field one after halftime once the lights returned to working order.
A one handed save on a shot with 16 minutes left in the game by Fort Wayne goalkeeper Brendan Stangel kept the score at 2-1. But Western Illinois put the game away on a score by Fernando Pacheco, assisted by Armel Kouassi in the 80th minute.
Western Illinois improves to 3-5-0 (1-0-0 Summit). The 'Dons fall to 2-5-3 (0-1-0 Summit). Fort Wayne steps out of conference play with a non-league game on Tuesday against Marshall. Kick against the Thundering Herd is set for 5 p.m. at Hefner.
