PRINCETON, N. J. - Behind a hot hitting night for the Fort Wayne men's volleyball team, the Mastodons took a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-20) victory over the (RV) Princeton Tigers in Dillon Gymnasium on Friday night (Jan. 12). The Mastodons open the season with three straight sweeps for the first time in program history.
Fort Wayne came out on fire, hitting a high percentage from the get-go. The Mastodons hit .565 in the first set with a balanced attack. Six different Mastodons had at least two kills in the first set. The 'Dons never trailed the Tigers in the first set. Tony Price had two of his three service aces in the first set.
The second set was more of the same, with the 'Dons hitting .522. The Mastodons trailed 11-10, but Princeton had no answer for a 10-3 run. Five Mastodons had at least two kills in this second set thanks to Michael Keegan's balanced setting.
The third set was the Mastodons' best defensive set, as they held the Tigers to .000 hitting in the final frame of the night. Richie Diedrich had two of his five blocks in the final set. Price also contributed a pair of blocks to go along with his five third-set kills. Despite it having the worst hitting percentage of the night for the 'Dons, the third set still yielded a .476 percentage. Kade Bontrager put a cap on the night in a big way with two straight service aces to close the match.
Keegan came to play in his reunion with his younger brother Cade, the libero for Princeton. The Mastodon had 32 assists and 17 digs, 10 more than his brother. Keegan's previous career-high in digs was 13. His 17 digs was more than any other current Mastodon has had in their career at Fort Wayne. Keegan's double-double was the ninth of his career.
Price ended the night as the only Mastodon in double-digits in kills with 10. He hit .364 for the match. Diedrich had a 1.000 hitting night, with five kills on five attempts. Tomas Gago had eight kills with a .700 percentage in his Mastodon debut. Pelegrin Vargas had nine kills for a .615 percentage and Colton Stone had eight kills for .375. Fort Wayne held Princeton to .184 hitting for the match. The 'Dons finished with a .522 percentage.
