NEWARK, N.J. - The Fort Wayne men's volleyball team started the season 4-0 after a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 32-30) sweep of the NJIT Highlanders on Saturday (Jan. 13) in the NJIT Wellness and Events Center.
The Mastodons led wire-to-wire in the first set, opening up eight-point leads on two occasions. After a 3-2 score early, the 'Dons went on a 9-2 run to hold a lead they would not give up. Pelegrin Vargas and Colton Stone led the 'Dons in the first set with four kills each.
Stone led the 'Dons in the second set with three kills, and recorded two of his team-leading seven digs. The set was more back-and-forth early, but the 'Dons went on a three-point run behind a pair of service aces from Richie Diedrich to open up a 10-7 lead. The Mastodons did not give up the lead from this point on.
NJIT took a 5-4 lead early in the final set of the match, and did not let go of it until a three-point run from the 'Dons put them up 23-22. NJIT had four set points, but could not convert on any of them. Fort Wayne took the final three points of the match, with Stone earning one of his team-leading 12 kills and a service ace.
Vargas added 11 kills to Stone's 12 to lead the 'Dons. Diedrich had five kills and hit for .571 on the night. He holds a .576 average for the year. Fort Wayne ended with six service aces. Tony Price, Stone, Michael Keegan and Kolbie Knorr all had at least five digs.
Fort Wayne moves to 4-0 for the first time since the 2007 season, when the 'Dons went to the national championship match. The Mastodons have yet to drop a set in the 2018 season, having have four straight sweeps, which has also not been done since the 2007 season. That squad had six sweeps in a row. NJIT falls to 0-5 on the year. Fort Wayne returns home next week (Jan. 19-20) with matches against Harvard and Sacred Heart.
