Scouting Fort Wayne
Fort Wayne begins the 2018 campaign coming off a 5-23 season in 2017. However, the Mastodons return two players who were injured during the 2017 season to the court. Tony Price and Pelegrin Vargas come back from injury, and will both resume their roles at outside hitter. Fort Wayne adds four freshmen that could see potential time on the court, as well as Kolbie Knorr, a libero transferring from Quincy.
Scouting Emmanuel
Emmanuel is coming off a 7-19 season, which ended in an eighth-place finish in the Conference Carolinas. The Lions ended the season on a two-match win streak by topping Erskine at home and Pfeiffer on the road. The Lions only played against one MIVA team last season, when they fell 3-1 at Quincy.
Scouting Lees-McRae
Lees-McRae comes to Fort Wayne after a Friday night match at No. 14 Ball State. The Bobcats had a 10-17, 8-10 record at the end the 2017 season and finished sixth in the Conference Carolinas. The Bobcats played one MIVA team in 2017, when they fell 3-0 to Lindenwood.
Back on the Outside
Sophomore Pelegrin Vargas and redshirt-junior Tony Price are both back from injuries that occurred in the 2017 season. Vargas started 20 matches as a freshman and averaged 3.18 kills per set. Price only saw action in the first set of the 2017 season, so he took a redshirt season. As a sophomore, he averaged 2.54 kills per set while starting all 29 matches.
The New Kid on the Block
Middle blocker Tomas Gago comes to Fort Wayne as a freshman from Santiago, Chile. He played for the Chilean National Team from 2012 to 2017. He also competed in the U19 World Championship, and the South American and Panamerican Cups in the U19, U21, U23 and Senior classifications.
Someone You Can't Ig-Knorr
Junior transfer Kolbie Knorr joins the Mastodons after two seasons at MIVA foe Quincy. Knorr averaged 1.97 digs per set as a sophomore Hawk. He was selected as the MIVA Defensive Player of the Week on April 3, 2017 behind three double-digit dig performances against Culver Stockton, at Ball State and at Fort Wayne.
Setting the Stage
Freshman setter Frederico Santos also joins the Mastodons with National Team experience, as he has been a member of the Portuguese Men's National Team since 2013. He was the youngest player on the Portuguese roster for the 2017 FIVB World League. In addition to his national team experience, he is a six-time national champion and five-time regional champion with Associação Académica de São Mamede.
National Players
Three players on the Fort Wayne roster have playing experience for their respective national teams. Sophomore Pelegrin Vargas competed for the Puerto Rican National Team, freshman Tomas Gago for the Chilean National Team, and freshman Frederico Santos for the Portuguese National Team.
Where They're From
Tony Price and Max Hansen are two of only three players from the state of Indiana playing on an NCAA DI or DII roster for the 2018 season. Jack Carlson is one of only two players from Colorado on a DI or DII roster for this season.
MIVA WIN No. 250
With Fort Wayne's 3-2 victory over Quincy on Feb. 24, 2017, the 'Dons reached its 250th program win in MIVA competition.

Sophomore Pelegrin Vargas was named to the Karch Kiraly Award Watch List for the 2018 season. The Karch Kiraly Award is given to an outstanding outside hitter at the DI or DII level. Santos joins the likes of Josh Tuaniga (Long Beach State), who won the Lloy Ball Award in 2017, and Leo Durkin (BYU) who was selected as a finalist in 2017. There are four MIVA setters who made the watch list.
