Men's Volleyball Gets Second Straight Sweep to Start the Season
1/6/2018 9:33:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Overcoming a slow start, the Fort Wayne men's volleyball team took a 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-18) sweep over the Lees-McRae Bobcats on Saturday (Jan. 6) on Arnie Ball Court.
The first set was close throughout, but the Mastodons never trailed, despite never leading by more than three. Tony Price had five kills in the first set, but the team only hit .207.
The Mastodons started to heat up in the second set, garnering a .300 hitting percentage as a team. Colton Stone and Richie Diedrich had four kills each, and Pelegrin Vargas had five. The Bobcats led 12-10 in the set, but would not lead again after the 'Dons went on a 14-3 run to lead 24-15. This was in large part due to six straight serves from Diedrich. The Mastodons held the Bobcats to a -.033 hitting clip in the second set.
The hot hitting continued into the final set of the night, when the 'Dons hit a blistering .600, with only one attack error. Alex Dickmann came off the bench in the third, and ended his night 6-0-8 (.750). Vargas continued to spark Fort Wayne, finishing with 11 kills, 10 of which were in the last two sets. He finished with a .409 percentage. The 'Dons went on a 12-4 run early in the final set to take a lead that they would not give up. The straight-set match clocked in at just one hour and 10 minutes.
Fort Wayne finished with a .357 team hitting percentage. The Mastodons only hit at this clip or better in three matches last season.
Fort Wayne starts the season 2-0 for the first time since 2014, while Lees-McRae falls to 0-2. The Mastodons hit the road next week for a Friday/Saturday (Jan. 12-13) pair of matches on the east coast, when they visit Princeton and NJIT.
