‘Dons Never Trail In 3-1 Win Over Oral Roberts
10/13/2018 10:17:00 PM | Men's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Three different Mastodons scored for Purdue Fort Wayne in a 3-1 Summit League victory over Oral Roberts on Saturday (Oct. 13) evening at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
Blake Cearns scored his sixth goal of the year in the 20th minute to put the 'Dons up 1-0. The goal was assisted by Alex Frank and Romain Lopez after Frank took a pass from Lopez dribbled from the right side and centered the ball for Cearns.
Less than two minutes later the 'Dons struck again. Chris Baranowski headed in a Lopez free kick. Lopez now has nine assists on the season. He passed his head coach Mike Harper (1995) and assistant coach Bronn Pfeiffer (1986) who had eight in a season.
Oral Roberts cut the Purdue Fort Wayne advantage in half with a goal in the 56th minute. Junior Chavez nocked a free kick into the goal to make the score 2-1.
The Golden Eagles would never get the equalizer, partly because of Matthew Lieshout. The senior, to use a basketball term, scored from downtown on a free kick nearly 40 yards from the goal. His shot went in just under the bar, off the hand of the leaping goalkeeper. Lieshout now has 10 goals on the year. He is the fourth Mastodon in the NCAA Division I era to reach double-digits goals for a season. He is the first since Max Touloute scored 13 in 2011.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 7-6-1 (1-2-0 Summit) while Oral Roberts falls to 6-4-2 (0-1-1 Summit).
The 'Dons step out of league play on Tuesday for a home match with Cincinnati. Kick is set for 7 p.m. at Hefner.
