Shutout Gives Men’s Soccer First Ever Win Over Cincinnati

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – A first half goal by freshman Alex Frank was the only tally the Purdue Fort Wayne men's soccer team needed on Tuesday (Oct. 16) evening at the Hefner Soccer Complex. The goal gave the 'Dons a 1-0 victory over Cincinnati. The win is Purdue Fort Wayne's first ever over Cincinnati.
The 'Dons controlled the pace for much of the match, holding an 8-2 edge in corner kicks. Six of the corners came in the second half. However, it was the first half when the 'Dons found the back of the net. Blake Cearns drove in from the left side and centered the ball to Frank. Frank beat the Cincinnati goalkeeper for Frank's fourth goal of the year. As a team, the 'Dons now have 31 goals on the season. It is the seventh most in a season in program history.
The Purdue Fort Wayne defense gave up only four shots on goal in the entire contest. Goalkeeper Tor Erik Larsen stopped all four to earn the shutout.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 8-6-1. One more win will match the NCAA Division I era record for single-season wins set just two years ago.
Cincinnati falls to 3-10-1.
The 'Dons are back in action next Tuesday (Oct. 23) in a Senior Night contest with IUPUI. It will be Purdue Fort Wayne's final non-league game of the year.
