Mastodons Win Ninth Match With 2-1 Senior Night Victory Over IUPUI

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – A pair of second half goals lifted the Purdue Fort Wayne men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over IUPUI on Tuesday (Oct. 23) evening at a chilly Hefner Soccer Complex.
The win is the ninth for the Mastodons on the season, matching the most the 'Dons have won in a year as a Division I program. The 2016 team also won nine contests. The only Summit League team with more wins on the season is No. 11 in the nation Denver with 11.
It is Purdue Fort Wayne's third straight win over IUPUI. The 'Dons will finish the season 3-1-1 against Horizon League foes this year.
While the 'Dons earned the win, it was IUPUI on the board first in the contest. Seth Vang delivered a long cross to Sean Siasia. Siasia finished for the goal in the ninth minute.
Seven minutes into the second half, Matthew Lieshout tied the game for the Mastodons. His free kick just outside of the box curved around the IUPUI wall into the upper left corner of the net. Lieshout now has 11 goals on the season. He is tied for 11th most in a season all-time in program history. His 11 goals is the third most for a season in the Division I era for the 'Dons. Only Max Touloute in 2011 (13) and Chas Parry (13) in 2004 have scored more goals in a season during the DI era.
The 'Dons controlled the majority of the second half and finally broke through for the game-winner in the 83rd minute. Chris Baranowski touch passed it out to Adam Gannon who delivered a cross to Blake Cearns just a few feet outside the goal. All Cearns had to do was tap it in and he did so. The goal stands as Cearns' seventh of the year.
Purdue Fort Wayne held a 15-7 advantage in shots and 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
Prior to the contest Kyle Hoagland, Zach Tom, Alex Joneson, Lieshout, Romain Lopez, Gannon and Andy O'Donoghue were honored as part of Senior Night festivities. Longtime assistant and former head coach and student-athlete Bronn Pfeiffer was also recognized prior to the game. Pfeiffer, a member of the department's hall of fame, will be stepping down from his position following the season.
IUPUI falls to 3-10-3. The Mastodons are 9-6-1. The 'Dons have two Summit League games remaining. First up is a trip to Eastern Illinois on Saturday (Oct. 27). Eastern Illinois is unbeaten in league play.
