Mastodons Earn 10th Win With 2-1 Extra Time Victory At EIU

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Ryan Bernt scored in the 98th minute to give Purdue Fort Wayne a 2-1 win over Eastern Illinois on Saturday (Oct. 27) in a Summit League men's soccer match.
The game featured a frantic first 10 minutes with both teams scoring a goal. It was Blake Cearns getting on the board in the eighth minute. He took a pass from Adam Gannon for the goal. Cearns now has eight goals on the season. It was Gannon's fourth assist.
Eastern Illinois responded with a goal less than three minutes later. Alex Castaneda scored off a rebound to knot the game at one.
That would be all the scoring in regulation. In the 98th minute, the 'Dons earned a corner kick which would be the difference. Romain Lopez delivered a pass to Bernt just five yards out of the goal. Bernt finished the play for his second goal of the season.
The assist was Lopez' 10th of the season. He is tied for the second most assists in a season in program history. Only Juan Diaz recorded more assists in a season for the Mastodons. He had 12 in 1984 and 10 in 1986. Lopez' 10 assists is a new Division I era record for the 'Dons.
The win gives the 'Dons their 10th victory of the season. It is the most the 'Dons have won in a year since entering Division I in 2001.
The 'Dons are now 10-6-1 (2-2-0 Summit League). The result hands Eastern Illinois their first Summit League loss. They are now 3-9-2 (1-1-2 Summit League). Purdue Fort Wayne scored two goals on the Panthers on Saturday, after the Panthers had surrendered only one goal in their first three league games.
The 'Dons are back in action on Nov. 3 at Western Illinois. It will be a 2 p.m. ET start in the regular season finale for the Mastodons.
