Fourth Quarter Surge Not Enough For Mastodon Comeback
11/15/2018 5:34:00 PM | Women's Basketball
CHARLESTON, Ill. - A fourth-quarter rally by the Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball team was not enough to overcome an early deficit, as the Mastodons fell at Eastern Illinois 72-63. The Mastodons record falls to 2-2 on the season.
The Mastodons were led by Kierstyn Repp with a team-high 17 points, knocking down five three-pointers on the day. Hannah Hess, Sierra Bell and Sh'Toya Sanders each finished with eight points. Hess also dished out a career- and game-high seven assists. De'Jour Young led all players with nine rebounds.
The Mastodons jumped out to an early lead on Eastern Illinois thanks to an 8-0 run. The 'Dons were unable to maintain pace as EIU responded by scoring the next 20 points. Late in the third quarter, Purdue Fort Wayne began to make its rally scoring 11 straight points to end the third and begin the fourth. The 'Dons would outscore the Panthers 25-6 over the final 12 minutes of the game, but the rally would come up just short.
As a team, the Mastodons out-shot the Panthers 44.2% to 41.4%. The 'Dons finished 23-of-52 from the field, 11-of-24 (45.8%) from beyond the arc and 6-of-9 (66.7%) at the free throw line.
Purdue Fort Wayne continues its road trip when they travel to Purdue on Sunday, November 18 for a 2 p.m. game.
