'Dons Unable to Work Fourth Quarter Magic Against Cougars
11/24/2018 5:18:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball team nearly overcame a double-digit deficit, but the Mastodons came up just short as they fell to the visiting SIUE Cougars 57-49.
Sh'Toya Sanders led the 'Dons with 12 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks. Jaelencia Williams and Sierra Bell each came off the bench to finish with eight points. Bell led the way with a game-high three assists.
After trading leads early in the first quarter, SIUE closed out the first and began the second period on a 13-2 advantage over a 7:26 stretch. The Mastodons ended the Cougars 9-0 run on a pair of jumpers by Sanders near the end of the second quarter. The 'Dons trailed by eight at halftime, 28-20, but cut the deficit to four, 33-29, after a 5-0 Mastodon run in the third. Purdue Fort Wayne closed the gap all the way down to one point after a three-pointer by Anna Lappenküper to begin the fourth quarter, but that would be as close as they would get as SIUE scored the next six points and 12 of the next 14.
The Mastodons out-shot the Cougars on the night, finishing 16-of-50 (32%) from the field. They shot 2-of-17 (11.8%) on three-point attempts and 15-of-21 (71.4%) at the free throw line.
Purdue Fort Wayne travels to Loyola-Chicago for a noon ET game on Thursday, November 29.
