FORT WAYNE, Ind. – A season-high 21 free throws for the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons fueled an 87-77 non-league victory over IUPUI on Tuesday (Dec. 18) evening at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
John Konchar earned his fifth double-double in six games with 30 points and 10 rebounds. He also added four assists, two blocks and two steals. The senior was 10-of-14 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the stripe.
Kason Harrell totaled 20 points while going 7-of-8 from the free throw line.
Marcus DeBerry finished with 13 points. DeBerry had a pair of key 3-pointers in a 14-1 Purdue Fort Wayne run just after the 10-minute mark of the first half. IUPUI opened the game with a lead as large as 10 points but the 14-1 stretch, which also included two Konchar treys and a Konchar dunk, put the 'Dons up 32-24 with 6:45 left in the half. The push would give the 'Dons the lead for good. IUPUI would never cut the deficit closer than four points the rest of the game and never closer than eight points over the final 10 minutes of the game.
The 'Dons shot 54.7 percent (29-of-53) from the floor and limited IUPUI to 39.4 percent (26-of-66) shooting.
Purdue Fort Wayne took their lead with 3-pointers, making seven in the first half. But grew their lead at the free throw line, connecting on 14-of-18 in the second half.
Konchar's double-double is the 41st of his career. He now has 998 career rebounds. Only three student-athletes in Summit League history have ever recorded 1,000 rebounds. One of the three players is South Dakota State's Mike Daum who grabbed his 1,000th board on Tuesday night.
IUPUI falls to 8-4. The 'Dons move to 7-7. Purdue Fort Wayne hosts Siena Heights on Thursday (Dec. 20) at 7 p.m.
