Fort Wayne Tops Lindenwood 3-2 on the Road

SAINT CHARLES, Mo. – The No. 15 Fort Wayne men's volleyball team took a five-set victory (21-25, 25-17, 16-25, 25-23, 15-13) over the Lindenwood Lions on Friday (Feb. 23) in Hyland Arena.
In the first set, Fort Wayne had an early 9-5 lead after four straight points, but Lindenwood responded with a 12-5 run. The 'Dons had a 4-1 run ended by an ace from Kade Bontrager, but the Lions the final three points of the set.
Lindenwood led 12-9 in the second, but the 'Dons went on a 15-4 run to open up an eight-point lead. Bontrager had his second ace of the night at the end of the run, and Tony Price had a kill to end the set. Fort Wayne hit a scorching .533 to take the set 25-17.
In the third, the Lions jumped out to an 8-5 lead early, and extended it to 22-15 with five straight. Colton Stone had four kills in the third.
Fort Wayne took the first three points of the fourth set, but Lindenwood kept it close throughout. The Lions took a late lead behind three straight points, but the 'Dons evened the score at 17. The Mastodons then had three set-point opportunities to go to set five. Stone had five more kills in the fourth, and Kolbie Knorr had five of his 10 digs.
In the last set of the night, the 'Dons reached eight first, having the lead at the switch. Fort Wayne had the potential for three match points and needed all three. Pelegrin Vargas had six kills on nine attacks in the ending set, including the match-winner. The 'Dons hit .350 in the final stretch.
Austin Gerwig had 10 kills and six digs in his first career start. Stone finished with 15 kills and three blocks. Vargas had 17 to lead the Mastodons. Michael Keegan finished with 51 assists and seven digs in the five-setter. Price had six kills for a .444 percentage. Vargas and Bontrager both had two aces, and the 'Dons finished with eight.
Fort Wayne improves to 10-4, 2-3 MIVA, matching head coach Ryan Perrotte's highest win total in his three seasons. Lindenwood falls to 6-8, 1-5 MIVA. The Mastodons will have a match at Quincy on Saturday (Feb. 24) at 8:30 p.m. EST at Pepsi Arena.
