Fort Wayne Drops Road Contest at No. 14 Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Despite going into extra points in the first two sets, the Fort Wayne men's volleyball team dropped a road match 3-0 (27-25, 33-31, 25-13) at No. 14 UC Santa Barbara on Friday night (March 10) at Rob Gym.
The Mastodons went on a 3-1 run to start the match, behind two blocks from Richie Diedrich, assisted by Colton Stone and Pelegrin Vargas. The rest of the set rallied from one side to the other, including a 6-2 run by the Mastodons that opened up a 14-10 lead. UC Santa Barbara had a 3-0 run to even the score at 18, and later had a 4-1 stretch that gave the Gauchos a 24-23 lead. UCSB had a double-block that ended the first set by Connor Drake and Roy McFarland. Stone had six kills in the opening set.
The second set was tight throughout, as neither team led by more than three. It took three straight from the Gauchos to take the set. Vargas had six kills in the second, followed by Tony Price with four.
UCSB took the first seven points of the last set, later followed by an 11-1 run. Vargas had four kills in the final frame.
Vargas led the offense with two aces and 13 kills, followed by Stone, who had nine. Defensively, Michael Keegan led with nine digs, followed by Kolbie Knorr and Stone who had six each. Diedrich led Fort Wayne with three blocks.
Fort Wayne falls to 14-5, while UCSB improves to 8-5. The Mastodons play again on Saturday (March 10) with a 7 p.m. PST match at Concordia Irvine.
