Softball Closes Out NDSU Series With a 5-2 Victory
4/29/2018 4:45:00 PM | Softball
Lauren Watson and Demitra Burns each finished 2-for-4 on the day, as Burns had a pair of RBIs while Watson scored two runs. Maria Palmegiani was a perfect 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI. In all, seven different Mastodons collected a hit on the day.
Fort Wayne starting pitcher Shaina Eyre didn't allow an earned run in her complete game victory. Eyre limited the Bison to two unearned runs on five hits, while she struck out a season-high five batters.
The winds, gusting up to 45 mph, played a significant role early on as both batters and pitchers had to adjust. The starting pitchers for both side controlled the game early on, as each team had only one hit through the first four innings.
Both teams got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning, with all six runs in the inning coming with two outs. Fort Wayne got it going when Courtney Holm doubled off the left field wall with two away. Sydney Windlan followed with an 11-pitch at-bat, eventually singling to right. A single by Wilzbacher allowed Holm to score and Watson followed with a single of her own to bring home Windlan. Burns added a double to the centerfield wall, scoring two runs. NDSU came back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs on a Mastodon error with two outs.
The 'Dons tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Back-to-back one-out singles from Watson and Burns put runners on the corners. Palmegiani delivered on a suicide squeeze on the third pitch of her at-bat, allowing Watson to score easily.
NDSU put a runner on in the bottom of the seventh, but Burns made a spectacular diving catch to her left, and then tagged first base for the double play to end the game.
Fort Wayne returns home to wrap up its regular season with a three-game series against Omaha, beginning with a doubleheader on Friday, May 4, at 2 p.m.
