FORT WAYNE, Ind. – A pair of ninth-inning runs gave Fort Wayne a 3-2 walk-off victory over first place Oral Roberts on Thursday (May 17) afternoon at Mastodon Field.
Fort Wayne started the ninth down 2-1 and facing Oral Roberts closer Kyler Stout. Stout ranks fourth in the nation with 14 saves on the year. Senior Brock Logan began the ninth inning with a single. Spencer Strobel pinch ran for Logan at first. Senior Brady Hettinger followed with a bunt that was bobbled by the Oral Roberts third baseman, putting runners at first and second. Senior Dylan Wilbert then followed with a successful sacrifice bunt to put runners at second and third. Garrett Mohler stepped to the plate and hit a high bouncer over the pitcher on the first pitch he saw. The bouncer easily scored Strobel from third but Oral Roberts second baseman Nick Roark's off-balance attempt to throw out Mohler was high and wild. The error allowed Hettinger to come around to score the winning run.
Fort Wayne went from the losing end of the contest to the winning side in four pitches as each Fort Wayne batter put the first pitch he saw in play.
Stout's four pitches dropped his record to 0-2. Brandon Phelps saw his complete game transfer into a victory. Phelps is now 5-6 on the season. The senior gave up nine hits and two runs while earning seven strikeouts in his final collegiate contest.
Logan knocked in Fort Wayne's other run on the day when he singled in Jack Lang in the sixth. Both Oral Roberts runs came in the third. Harrison Smith had a home run for ORU.
Fort Wayne improves to 11-35 (7-21 Summit League). Oral Roberts falls to 33-18 (22-6 Summit League).
The Mastodons will look to clinch a series win on Friday in game two of the series. First pitch at Mastodon Field is set for 2 p.m.
