FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Fort Wayne baseball honored seven seniors on Saturday (May 19) prior to the Summit League game with Oral Roberts. The Mastodons fell in the contest 6-1 which featured a 27-minute rain delay in the top of the sixth inning.
Shannon Baker, Brock Logan, Brady Hettinger, Dylan Wilbert, Zak Kellogg, Damian Helm and Brandon Phelps were honored as part of the festivities. However, it was Garrett Mohler with the big hit of the day. His solo home run to right field in the third inning made the score 2-1.
It stayed a 2-1 game until Oral Roberts scored two more in the fifth and another two in the ninth, extending their lead to 6-1.
Fort Wayne's best chance to tie the score came in the fourth. The 'Dons chased ORU starter Logan Michaels after back-to-back walks. Colton Larkins came in and earned a fly out and a double play to halt the threat.
Michaels would go on to pick up the win after three scoreless innings of relief. He is now 2-1.
Chase Phelps tossed seven innings, striking out a career-high nine. He took the loss and finishes the year at 1-4. Two of the four runs he gave up came in the fifth when Summit League home run leader Spencer Henson hit his ninth home run of the season.
Oral Roberts will be the No. 1 seed in the Summit League Tournament next week as they improve to 35-18 (24-6). The Mastodons conclude the season 11-37 (7-23).
