FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Matthew Lieshout had a hat trick in Purdue Fort Wayne's 5-0 victory over Marian on Friday (Aug. 24) evening at the Hefner Soccer Complex. He is the first Mastodon to record a hat trick since Austin West against IUPUI on Sept. 27, 2014.
Lieshout broke a scoreless first third of the game with a pair of goals in the 35th minute. His first tally was assisted by Ryan Bernt. His second came unassisted off a freekick.
The 'Dons extended their lead to 3-0 with a goal six minutes into the second half. Blake Cearns earned a breakaway but saw his first shot rejected. He pounced on his own rebound and put it in the back of the net. It is his first goal as a Mastodon.
Lieshout picked up his third goal thanks to a penalty kick in the 62nd minute.
Bernt finished off the scoring with just over 10 minutes left on the game. Bernt took a long pass from fellow freshman Lefteri Fegaras and beat the Marian keeper trying to run across his line to defend the shot.
The 'Dons held a 19-5 advantage in shots and 7-3 lead in corner kicks.
Marian falls to 0-1 with the loss while the 'Dons are now 1-0.
Purdue Fort Wayne hosts Wright State on Monday at 7 p.m. in a non-league match.
