Raiders Edge Mastodons With Late Goal 3-2

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Mastodons trailed for less than six minutes on Monday (Aug. 27) night at the Hefner Soccer Complex against the Wright State Raiders. Unfortunately for the Purdue Fort Wayne men's soccer team, it was enough time for the Raiders to take the match 3-2.
Purdue Fort Wayne scored two minutes in the contest when Fort Wayne native Zach Tom delivered a nice feed to Blake Cearns in space 20 yards in front of the goal. Cearns capitalized on that space to speed to his right and beat the Wright State keeper who couldn't keep up with Cearns. It was Cearns' second goal of the season.
Wright State didn't respond until the 51st minute when Stefan Rokvic scored what would be the first of his three goals in the game.
The 'Dons answered 12 minutes later. Romain Lopez delivered a perfect free kick to the box where Chris Baranowski completed a header for a goal. It was Baranowski's first goal of the season and second of his career.
Wright State tied it in the 79th minute and then took the lead in the 85th minute. The game-winning goal by Rokvic came off a rebound of his teammate Jackson Dietrich's first shot.
The 'Dons applied some pressure in the final five minutes looking for the equalizer, with Purdue Fort Wayne's best chance being a shot by freshman Moses Akimana that hit the left post.
Wright State improves to 2-0-0 while the 'Dons fall to 1-1-0. Purdue Fort Wayne heads south to Texas this weekend for a tournament hosted by UTRGV. The 'Dons will play UTRGV on Friday (Aug. 31) and Houston Baptist (Sept. 2) on Sunday.
