Romain Lopez’ PK Lifts ‘Dons To 3-2 Win Over Bowling Green
9/22/2018 10:28:00 PM | Men's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Romain Lopez scored on a penalty kick less than two minutes into overtime to give the Purdue Fort Wayne men's soccer team a 3-2 extra time victory over Bowling Green on Saturday (Sept. 22) evening at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
The two teams exchanged scores all night but the Mastodons never trailed after scoring the first goal of the game. Matthew Lieshout saw his penalty kick hit the crossbar in the 14th minute. He chased down the rebound and converted his second try for a goal. Lieshout now has seven goals on the season.
It stayed 1-0 until Bowling Green tied the game in the 49th minute. Peter Pugliese passed from the left to Jensen Lukacsko who completed the tally.
The 'Dons thought they might have had the winner in regulation. Alex Frank headed in a beautiful cross from Adam Gannon for a goal in the 76th minute. It was Frank's third goal of the year.
The goal would not be the game winner, however, as Bowling Green answered back in the 81st minute. Chris Brennan scored, assisted by Tate Robertson and Peter Pugliese.
Lopez would earn the golden goal on a penalty kick in the 92nd minute and it was his pass that helped earn the chance. Seconds earlier Lopez sent a long pass to the corner of the box that Blake Cearns chased down. Bowling Green's goalkeeper came out to challenge Cearns, but took out Cearns' feet in the process. The foul earned Lopez' penalty kick.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 5-3-0. The Bowling Green Falcons fall to 1-5-2. The 'Dons are in action again on Tuesday in non-league game at Green Bay.
