Mastodons Bite Chicago State Cougars in 5-0 Win
9/22/2018 6:20:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Thanks to a hat-trick from Kayla Wisniewski, Purdue Fort Wayne took a 5-0 win over Chicago State. The Mastodons broke the single-match program record in assists with eight on the day. The previous record was six in one match, which had happened three times, most recently in 2013 against IUPUI. The team's eight assists marks the ninth most in a Division I contest this season.
The overcast and mid-60s Saturday (Sept. 22) was a perfect weather day for soccer. Wisniewski scored the first three goals for the 'Dons, finding the net first in the 18th minute. She was fed inside the six-yard box from Deanna Hecht, who received a headed pass from Kailyn Wade. The rest of the first half was relatively quiet, with the halftime score holding at 1-nil.
After the break, Wisniewski scored twice in just a 1:12 span. Both goals were assisted by Kendall Quinn. Her second of the day came after the Chicago State keeper came out of the box, and the freshman striker beat her on the dribble. The second came by way of a header inside the 18 from a feed from Quinn on the right side that flew over the keeper. Wisniewski moved to five goals for her young season. Wisniewski's hat-trick was only the second by a freshman in program history, the first time to be done since Kristin Macdonald in 2000. Wisniewski is the eighth freshman to score a hat-trick in Division I this season.
The 'Dons shared the scoring after the completion of Wisniewski's hat-trick, as Hecht and Hannah Kroger both scored to give the final line of 5-0. Hecht scored in minute 56 on a feed from Cesiley LaCourt that nutmegged a Cougar defender. Kroger was also credited an assist on the goal. Kroger scored her first goal of the season in minute 74, coming from the right side of the field to score. Hecht and Chloee Foor picked up assists on that goal.
Haley Lydon played all 90 minutes, picking up her first shutout of the season, the team's second. She totaled eight saves in the contest, tying her season-high, which came at Evansville.
Purdue Fort Wayne will start Summit League play 3-4-3, welcoming South Dakota State on Friday (Sept. 28) at 7 p.m. for the first League match of the season. Chicago State falls to 0-8-1.
