South Dakota State Tops Purdue Fort Wayne 2-1
9/28/2018 9:39:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer fell to South Dakota State 2-1 on Friday night (Sept. 28) at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
The majority of the first half was quiet, but SDSU scored first. The Jackrabbits found the net in the 39th minute, with Hannah Evans scoring off a clear, then beating her defender and the Mastodon keeper Haley Lydon.
The second half was also devoid of many scoring opportunities until a slew of shots broke open late. Freshman Kayla Wisniewski found her sixth goal of the year by breaking away from a clump of defenders outside the 18 that included the Jackrabbit keeper, and tapping in the ball on the run. Her goal moved her into seventh all-time in goals in a single season. The current record stands at 11. Wisniewski was assisted by Hannah Kroger, who tallied her fifth assist of the year, which moved her into third all-time in single-season assists, just one off of the first-place spot.
SDSU scored just 28 seconds after the Mastodons evened it up, as Marisa Schulz ripped in a shot from beyond the 18 on her own. The ball flew into the top left corner of the net, out of reach of Lydon.
Kroger had a chance to score in the 84th minute on a penalty kick, but it was saved by the SDSU keeper and tipped over the frame.
The 'Dons and Jacks were even in shots on goal with six.
The Mastodons fall to 3-5-3, while SDSU improves to 6-4-1. The 'Dons are back in action on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. when they play host to North Dakota State for Pink Out.
