CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Behind a career night from junior Richie Diedrich, No. 13 Purdue Fort Wayne dominates Queens in a sweep (25-18, 25-14, 25-17). Diedrich had six kills with an .857 hitting rate and tied his career-high with eight blocks.
The Mastodons did not trail in the first or second set. They were led in the first set by Pelegrin Vargas and Tony Price, who recorded four and three kills respectively. Kolbie Knorr had seven of his nine digs to lead the defense.
Fiery hitting from the 'Dons led to a .609 hitting percentage with only errors in the second set. Vargas had five of his 12 kills on 5-1-7 for the frame. A 5-1 start to the set put the 'Dons up for the duration, as the Royals never got closer than three points. A 6-1 run closed the set, including three kills from Vargas.
Diedrich went off for 4-0-4 in the final set of the night, with three kills coming within the first 11 points that the 'Dons scored. A 9-1 stretch in the middle of the stanza put the 'Dons up 20-10. Vargas finished 3-0-4 for the set to end his night with .500 hitting (12-2-20). Colton Stone recorded five blocks in the match to pair with Diedrich's eight.
The Mastodons held the Royals to .012 for the match. The 'Dons held three of their first four opponents to under .130 hitting as they improved to 4-0. This is the second season in a row, and the second in program history, that Purdue Fort Wayne has started the year with four straight sweeps.
The 13th-ranked Mastodons sit at 4-0 and return home for a pair of matches against No. 12 CSUN and No. 10 UC Santa Barbara.
