FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Despite going up 2-0 to start the match, No. 13 Purdue Fort Wayne fell to No. 10 Cal State Northridge 3-2 (17-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 15-11) on Friday (Jan. 18) on Arnie Ball Court.
Pelegrin Vargas led all attackers with 23 kills on 45 swings for a .400 rate, with nine kills coming in the first two sets. The team hit .542 in the opening set and added two aces. An 8-2 run put the 'Dons out of reach at 15-8, and the Matadors did not tie the set from that point on. Richie Diedrich went 3-0-3 in the middle in this frame.
Vargas dominated the second set, racking up six kills on eight swings. A 3-1 run to finish put the set out of reach, including a double block from Colton Stone and Tomas Gago. Vargas and Diedrich each had one of their four blocks in the second set.
The momentum shifted toward CSUN in the third set. A 9-1 run for the Matadors gave them a 17-13 lead, and the 'Dons could not fight back to closer than one point down. Kolbie Knorr had six of his 14 digs in the third frame.
The fourth was back and forth, but CSUN never trailed after the 5-4 mark. Eight kills and three blocks from Vargas was not enough to will the 'Dons to win the set.
The Matadors rode their momentum into the final set, when they used a 4-0 run to jump out to an 8-5 lead, forcing a Mastodon timeout. The 'Dons brought it within one with kills from Tomas Gago and Vargas, but Northridge went on a 4-1 run to close the match.
No. 13 Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 4-1, while No. 10 CSUN improves to 5-1. The Mastodons have a date with No. 12 UC Santa Barbara on Saturday night. The Gauchos are coming off a five-set win at Ball State.
