No. 12 UC Santa Barbara Tops No. 13 Purdue Fort Wayne in Four Sets

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Behind .366 hitting and 15 team blocks, No. 12 UC Santa Barbara overpowered No. 13 Purdue Fort Wayne 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-22) on Arnie Ball Court on Saturday (Jan. 19).
Colton Stone led the Mastodons, particularly in the opening frame, when he hit 7-0-9. He had a kill on the first point of the match which set the tone for the opening set. The 'Dons jumped out to a 8-2 lead, and the run was ended with a kill from Stone. The Gauchos pushed back to within four at 15-11, but the two squads traded points the rest of the way until Stone gathered his seventh kill of the set on the last point.
UCSB took the momentum away from the 'Dons entering the second set, storming out to an 18-9 lead from which the 'Dons could not recover. The Mastodons tried to push back late with a 4-2 run, but it was not enough to close the gap. Michael Keegan had an ace and a kill in this push.
An early 7-1 run put the Gauchos up four in the third set, and the 'Dons could not get closer than two the rest of the way. Eight different Mastodons recorded a dig in the third.
The Gauchos set the stage early in the fourth again, but Purdue Fort Wayne went on a 7-1 push behind a kill and ace from Stone to take a 12-9 lead. UCSB went on a subsequent 8-3 run capped off by two straight aces to take the lead for good. Richie Diedrich had three of his nine kills in the last set of the night.
Stone finished with a team-high 14 kills and two aces, while Pelegrin Vargas added 13 kills. Diedrich went 9-1-15 for .533 for the best percentage of any Mastodon. Michael Keegan picked up his 17th career double-double (first of the season) with 42 assists and 10 digs. He led the 'Dons in the latter category. Tomas Gago had a team-high four blocks.
No. 13 Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 4-2, while No. 12 UC Santa Barbara improves to 5-3. The 'Dons are back in action on Friday (Jan. 25) when they visit the No. 9 Stanford Cardinal, who will be coming off two straight matches against No. 2 UC Irvine.
