Scouting Stanford
Stanford is off to a 5-1 start, and is coming off a four-set loss to No. 2 UC Irvine. The Cardinal are led by All-American sophomore Jaylen Jasper and Jordan Ewert, who are averaging 4.05 and 3.48 kills per set respectively. Their setter, Paul Bischoff, is averaging nearly 11 assists per set. Stanford holds wins over three ranked teams already this season: No. 14 Ball State, No. 7 Ohio State and No. 2 UC Irvine.
First Trip to Stanford
While the all-time series against the Cardinal is tied at 3-3, the Mastodons have never played on Stanford's home floor. The two squads have met in Fort Wayne four times and on neutral sites twice.
Kills For Pelegrin
Pelegrin Vargas leads the Mastodons in kills per set (3.80) and points per set (4.50). He is second in the MIVA in both of those categories, trailing only Jake Hanes of Ohio State. Last season, Vargas led the conference in kills per set through the conclusion of the regular season.
Richie Can Block Too!
In the Mastodons' win at Queens, Richie Diedrich had a career night. He tied his previous career-high eight blocks in three sets, a number he previously set when the 'Dons hosted No. 12 George Mason in 2017. His eight blocks at Queens is the second most in the NCAA so far this season in a three-set match.
Defense Wins Players of the Week
The Mastodons have earned the MIVA Defensive Player of the Week for both of the first two weeks of the season. In week two, Richie Diedrich earned his first MIVA Defensive Player of the Week after averaging 2.25 blocks per set. He had eight blocks in the 'Dons 3-0 win at Queens and one block in one set of action at Lees-McRae. In week one, Kolbie Knorr was selected after a 16-dig weekend (2.67 per set) in the Mastodons' wins over NJIT and (RV) Princeton. This was his first player of the week honor since becoming a Mastodon.
Digging Up Elite Company
Kolbie Knorr is averaging 2.08 digs per set in his career as a Mastodon, which places him in seventh in program history in that category. Scott Mais is next on the list, as he averaged 2.33 digs per set over his career in 1984-85.
Double-Double Threat
Michael Keegan has one double-double this season, which came against No. 12 UC Santa Barbara, but he had eight in 2018. His eight double-doubles put him tied for the most in a single season in the rally scoring era. C.J. Macias had eight in 2006. Keegan's career double-double total is 17, with 12 of them coming on the road.
Moving Up the Rankings
Michael Keegan has 2,803 career assists, putting him in sixth place in program history after passing Colin Lundeen in the second weekend of the 2019 season. Omar Rivera is next on the list in fifth; he had 2959 assists from 2012-15.
You Get a Dig, And You Get a Dig, And You Get...
Purdue Fort Wayne has the two of the top four performances in the country in team digs in three-set matches. The Mastodons had 37 digs against NJIT and at Queens. The Mastodons rank third in the MIVA in digs per set thanks in part to these matches.
Last Time Out
Purdue Fort Wayne fell in five sets to No. 10 Cal State Northridge and in four sets to No. 12 UC Santa Barbara. Pelegrin Vargas led the Mastodons with 36 kills over the two matches.
Next Time Up
The Mastodons will take another flight next week when they travel to Sacred Heart and Harvard on the east coast. Last season, the 'Dons took a three-set win over SHU and a four-set win over Harvard. Both matches were in Fort Wayne in 2018.
