No. 8 Stanford Grinds Out 4-Set Win Over No. 15 Mastodons

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 15 Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team fell to the No. 8 Stanford Cardinal on Friday night (Jan. 25) in the Maples Pavilion with a final of 3-1 (25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 25-23).
Colton Stone and Pelegrin Vargas led the Mastodons with 15 kills each. The first set was close throughout, with neither team building up more than a three-point lead. Vargas had five of his kills and Kolbie Knorr had four of his 10 digs in the opening frame.
The Mastodons jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the second set, which was capped by a Tomas Gago kill. Stanford went on an 8-2 run to lead 13-12. A four-point push later on put the Cardinal up 22-18, out of reach of the 'Dons despite a late push.
The 'Dons started the third set well too, going up 11-6. The two squads traded runs, but Purdue Fort Wayne ground out the ending stretch, having a Vargas kill as the exclamation point on the frame.
A 10-6 start in the fourth set put the 'Dons up early, but Stanford went on a 5-1 run to even it out. Then the 'Dons and Cardinal went back and forth, but Stanford won four of the last five points to take the match.
Richie Diedrich tied his career-high with eight blocks on the night. Knorr and Tony Price led the backcourt with 10 digs each.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 4-3, while Stanford improves to 6-1. The two teams will have a rematch tomorrow night (Jan. 26) at 10 p.m. EST in the Burnham Pavilion.
