Colton Stone's 15 Kills Not Enough Against No. 8 Stanford
1/27/2019 12:00:00 AM | Men's Volleyball
STANFORD, Calif. - Despite 15 kills from redshirt-senior Colton Stone, No. 15 Purdue Fort Wayne fell to No. 8 Stanford 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-23) in the Burnham Pavilion.
The Cardinal went up 8-3 early in the match to take a lead that the Mastodons could not scrap back from, as the lead ballooned to as many as the final eight-point deficit. Stone went 2-0-3 in the opening frame, but the 'Dons were buoyed by Alex Dickmann's 3-0-4 off the bench. Purdue Fort Wayne had its best hitting set in the first with .346.
Stone came alive in the second, when he had six kills on 13 swings. Purdue Fort Wayne started the set with an 8-3 edge that Frederico Santos had an ace to conclude. Stanford had a 9-3 push that forced a timeout, followed shortly after by a 4-0 run to put the set away.
Stone did more of the same in the third and went off for seven kills on 13 attempts. Pelegrin Vargas had four of his eight kills in the last set. The Mastodons led at 18-17, but Stanford was able to go on an 8-5 push to end the match.
Purdue Fort Wayne hit .278 for the match. Kolbie Knorr had five digs, while Vargas, Santos and Stone all had four.
The Mastodons fall to 4-4. Stanford improves to 7-1. The Mastodons head to Sacred Heart and Harvard next weekend (Feb. 1-2) for chances to get back in the win column.
