MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois Leathernecks turned the script on the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons on Saturday (Jan. 19). The Mastodons entered the game as the nation's leader in 3-pointers but WIU used 15 3-pointers to defeat the Mastodons 87-58 at Western Hall.
Western Illinois opened the first 20 minutes with 10 made 3-pointers. C.J. Duff made 5-of-6 from long range in the first half while Kobe Webster connected on 4-of-5. It put the Leathernecks up 44-27 at half. The second half saw WIU make 5-of-7 from long range to extend their advantage.
John Konchar entered the night needing 27 points to pass Frank Gaines and set a new record for most points in a Mastodon career. Konchar finished with 12 points, meaning he will likely now break the record at home as the 'Dons return to Gates for three consecutive games.
Duff finished with a game-high 30 points for the Leathernecks.
Jarred Godfrey had 10 points, making 5-of-7 from the field. Marcus DeBerry, Matt Holba and Kason Harrell each had eight points. WIU finished the game 35-of-62 from the floor (56.5 percent). Purdue Fort Wayne shot 23-of-59 (39.0 percent).
