FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball team was unable to take down preseason Summit League favorite South Dakota State Thursday afternoon (Jan. 3), as the Mastodons fell 85-52. The loss drops the 'Dons to 4-11 on the season and 0-3 in league play.
Sierra Bell led Purdue Fort Wayne with 11 points and three assists. De'Jour Young finished with 10 points and added three assists. Sh'Toya Sanders led all players with eight rebounds to go along with a team-high two steals and adding seven points. As a team, the Mastodons out-rebounded SDSU 32-to-25, holding the Jackrabbits to their second fewest rebound total on the season.
After South Dakota State opened the game with a three-pointer, the 'Dons scored back-to-back buckets from Young and Sanders, giving them a 5-3 lead. SDSU responded with three straight baskets to retake the lead for good. The Mastodons trailed 11-9 midway through the opening quarter before the Jacks went on a 10-0 run to end the first period and begin the second.
For the game, the Mastodons connected on 18-of-45 (40%) from the floor, 4-of-12 (33.3%) from behind the arc, and 12-of-20 (60%) at the free throw line.
Purdue Fort Wayne returns to action Wednesday, January 9 when the Mastodons take on Oral Roberts at 7 p.m.
