Williams and Bell Have Career Nights as Mastodons Fall
1/9/2019 10:10:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Jaelencia Williams and Sierra Bell had career nights for the Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball team, but the Mastodons were unable to hang on as they fell 72-61 to Oral Roberts. The 'Dons now sit at 4-12 on the season and 0-4 in Summit League play.
Williams earned her first career double-double, finishing the night with 23 points, 15 rebounds, and four blocks. She becomes the first Mastodon to finish with 20 and 15 in a game since Stefanie Mauk on Dec. 22, 2012 against Rochester. Bell had a career-high nine assists to go along with nine points and five rebounds. Bell's nine assists are the most by a Mastodon since Amanda Hyde had nine at Detroit Mercy on Dec. 21, 2013. Sh'Toya Sanders nearly had a double-double of her own, finishing with 12 points and eight boards.
As a team, the Mastodons out-rebounded ORU 47-28, dished out 16 assists and finished with 10 blocks. It is the third time this season the 'Dons have finished with double-digit blocks in a game, marking the first time a Mastodon team has reached double-digit blocks more than once in a season.
Early in the first quarter the Mastodons opened up a lead thanks for a 9-0 scoring run, six of which came from Williams. Oral Roberts responded with a run of its own, scoring the next eight points. With the score tied 17-17 to begin the second quarter, the Golden Eagles out-scored the 'Dons 7-2 to take the lead for good. The Mastodons cut the deficit to eight midway through the fourth quarter, but that would be as close as they would get down the stretch.
For the night, the 'Dons shot 21-of-53 (39.6%) from the floor, 4-of-12 (33.3%) beyond the arc and 15-of-23 (65.2%) at the free throw line.
