'Dons Drop Road Matchup to Coyotes
1/12/2019 3:35:00 PM | Women's Basketball
VERMILLION, S.D. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball team was unable to knock off the reigning Summit League champion South Dakota Coyotes Saturday afternoon (Jan. 12), as the Mastodons dropped the road game 69-51. The 'Dons are now 4-13 on the year and 0-5 in league play.
Anna Lappenküper led Purdue Fort Wayne with 11 points on the afternoon, nine of which came from downtown. De'Jour Young and Sierra Bell dropped in nine points, while Bell led the 'Dons with three assists. Sh'Toya Sanders and Jaelencia Williams each had a team-high five rebounds.
The Mastodons led for most of the first quarter after scoring seven of the first nine points of the game. South Dakota used a 9-0 run to take its only lead of the first quarter 15-12. The 'Dons closed out the period with Young hitting a shot from downtown and capping off the quarter with a layup as Purdue Fort Wayne led 17-15. USD scored the first eight points of the second quarter to take the lead. The Coyotes out-scored the Mastodons 16-4 in the period as they trailed 31-21 at the half. The 'Dons pulled within seven, thanks to a 7-0 run midway through the third quarter, but that would be the narrowest the gap would be over the final 15 minutes of the game.
The Mastodons finished the game shooting 20-of-48 (41.7%), 7-of-19 (36.8%) on 3-point attempts and 4-of-8 (50%) at the free throw line.
Purdue Fort Wayne continues its road trip after a week off when the Mastodons travel to Western Illinois Saturday, January 19 at 5:30 p.m. ET.
