WIU Pulls Away In Second Half To Top Mastodons 2-0

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – A pair of second half goals by Western Illinois broke a scoreless first 45 minutes to give the Leathernecks a 2-0 decision over the Purdue Fort Wayne men's soccer team on Saturday (Oct. 19) in a Summit League match at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
Western Illinois went ahead on a goal by Daisuke Otsuka assisted by Enric Ferrer in the 52nd minute. WIU's second goal came in the 73rd minute.
The Mastodons had several chances but were never able to finish. Alex Frank hit the crossbar in the 12th minute and Mathias Mikalsen did the same in the 55th minute. The Mastodons held possession for 53 percent of the contest and when they had the ball were in the attacking half 65 percent of the time.
WIU finished with a 22-19 edge in shots but the 'Dons led 11-7 in the first half.
Tor Erik Larsen contributed nine saves in the match. He helped keep WIU off the board in the 76th minute by forcing a miss by the Leathernecks on a penalty kick.
Frank had five shots for the Mastodons. Blake Cearns and Mikalsen each had three.
Purdue Fort Wayne led 8-5 in corner kicks.
WIU improves to 3-11-0 (2-1-0 Summit League). The 'Dons fall to 3-11-0 (0-3-0 Summit League). Purdue Fort Wayne is at Bowling Green on Tuesday (Oct. 22) in a non-league game.
