Mastodons Rally But Fall In Final Minute at SEMO 79-78
11/10/2019 8:20:00 PM | Men's Basketball
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Brian Patrick finished with 24 points and 12 rebounds to help the Purdue Fort Wayne men's basketball team erase a 15-point second half deficit on Sunday (Nov. 10) at Southeast Missouri State. But in the end the Redhawks topped the Mastodons 79-78.
The 'Dons trailed by 13 with 9:54 left following a pair of Redhawk free throws. Matt Holba went down to the other end and drained a 3-pointer. It keyed a stretch where the 'Dons started chipping at the deficit. The biggest push was a 9-0 stretch that put the Mastodons up 76-72 with 2:03 remaining. Marcus DeBerry capped it with a deep three, but SEMO responded with a three on the ensuing possession to make it a one possession game again.
SEMO took the lead back for good with 27 seconds left when Chris Harris made a 3-pointer. It came after SEMO nearly failed to get the ball in bounds. The 'Dons took a timeout and in the final seconds saw a pair of shots miss the mark.
In the first half, the Mastodons held a lead as large as eight points before SEMO went on a 16-0 run that contributed to a 40-32 SEMO lead at halftime.
Patrick had his best game as a Mastodon, scoring 16 points in the second half. Matt Holba scored 14 of his 17 points in the second half to help contribute to the comeback. Holba was a rebound short of a double-double with nine boards and four assists.
DeBerry had 12 points in the game and Dylan Carl added 11.
Harris led SEMO with 16 points.
SEMO improves to 1-1. The 'Dons fall to 1-2. Purdue Fort Wayne hosts Miami (Ohio) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
