Mastodons Take Down Polar Bears 81-47

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – In one of the best mascot matchups in the country this year, the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons defeated the Ohio Northern Polar Bears 81-47 on Sunday (Nov. 24) afternoon at the Gates Sports Center.
Jarred Godfrey had a game-high 15 points. He was an efficient 6-of-9 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers. Brian Patrick finished with 14 points while adding five rebounds, three assists, two steals and no turnovers. Deonte Billups had a career-best 13 points including a monster one-handed dunk in the second half that brought the fans to their feet.
All told, nine different 'Dons recorded a field goal in the contest.
The 'Dons held a 41-26 lead at the break after limiting Ohio Northern to 32.4 percent shooting in the first half. Purdue Fort Wayne never looked back after a 12-0 run in the frame. It gave the Mastodons a 19-11 advantage with 10:37 remaining. DeMierre Black and Marcus DeBerry each had four points in the push. A 14-2 run later in the first half put the 'Dons up 33-18. Patrick had seven points in that push which saw ONU go 0-of-5 from three.
The second half was highlighted by Cameron Benford's first career 3-pointer. He finished with five points and nine rebounds. Benford set a screen for Black and then floated back behind the arc. Black turned around and zipped a pass to the wide open Benford.
The 'Dons committed a season-low eight turnovers.
The win gives head coach Jon Coffman his 99th career victory. Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 3-5. Ohio Northern falls to 2-2.
The 'Dons are back in action on Wednesday (Nov. 27) at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. Tip is set for 7 p.m. against Niagara.
