Mastodons Drop Close Contest at SIUE 57-53

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Despite double-digit points from Anna Lappenküper and Hannah Albrecht, Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball dropped a close contest at SIUE 57-53 on Wednesday (Dec. 4).
Jazzy Hughes dropped in a 3-pointer with four seconds left to bring the Mastodons within three at 56-53, but SIUE had run the clock down enough to hold on after a free throw.
The Mastodons trailed 15-4 in the opening quarter, but they outscored the Cougars by seven points the rest of the way. A 19-13 second quarter brought the 'Dons back within striking distance, and Purdue Fort Wayne even took the lead in the third quarter, going up 35-32 with 5:04 left. Lappenküper drained a triple from the right side after the Mastodons forced a turnover.
SIUE took the lead back heading into the fourth quarter, leading 41-37. The Mastodons and Cougars were even the rest of the way, as Purdue Fort Wayne recorded six points from the charity stripe in the final four minutes for a 16-16 fourth quarter.
Albrecht led the Mastodons' scoring load, finishing with 14. Closely behind was Lappenküper, who had 13, including five from the line. Ellie Dykstra tied her career-high with six points, going a perfect 4 of 4 from the free throw line.
Purdue Fort Wayne forced 21 turnovers, collecting 14 steals. Sh'Toya Sanders had four, coupled with her seven points and 14 rebounds. The Mastodons led in second-chance points 15-10 and had 20 offensive boards.
The Mastodons fall to 3-7, while SIUE improves to 2-5. Purdue Fort Wayne will take the court again on Tuesday (Dec. 10) when the 'Dons head north to Ypsilanti, Michigan to face off against MAC foe Eastern Michigan. This will be the Mastodons fourth matchup against a MAC opponent this season.
