Mastodons Unable to Maintain Hot First Quarter Shooting

DENVER - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball team was unable to continue its hot shooting beyond the first quarter, as the Mastodons dropped their road contest at Denver 82-62 Wednesday night (Feb. 13).
Anna Lappenküper led all players with a game-high 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting. De'Jour Young came a rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with 11 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Sh'Toya Sanders ended her night with 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Mastodons began the game hitting on all cylinders, as the 'Dons connected on 72.7% of their shots in the first period. The game opened with the two teams trading baskets, but with the 'Dons trailing 6-4, they would go on a 12-2 run to open what would be their largest lead of the game 16-8. The Pioneers scored the next eight points, but it was Purdue Fort Wayne leading 18-16 at the end of the quarter. Still leading 26-25 midway through the second, Denver went on a 12-4 run to retake the lead for good. The Mastodons cut the deficit to two, 40-38, early in the third, before the Pioneers closed out the quarter with an 18-3 advantage.
For the night, the 'Dons out-shot Denver, finishing 24-of-50 (48.0%) from the field, 2-of-16 (12.5%) beyond the arc, and 12-of-19 (63.2%) at the free throw line. The Mastodons are now 6-18 on the season and 2-10 in The Summit League.
Purdue Fort Wayne continues its road trip when it travels to Omaha on Saturday, February 16. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. ET.
