Mastodons Go The Extra Mile For Road Win At Denver

DENVER – A first half 3-point barrage and a record game by John Konchar lifted the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons to a 94-81 men's basketball victory at Denver on Thursday (Feb. 14) evening at Magness Arena.
The win guarantees a winning season for the Mastodons. It is the sixth consecutive winning season for Purdue Fort Wayne. Only South Dakota State has accomplished the same feat over the last six years among Summit League members.
Denver led 24-20 with nine minutes left when the Mastodons came alive with a 25-4 run. Purdue Fort Wayne made seven 3-pointers in the run. The 'Dons forced eight Denver turnovers. Six different 'Dons scored in the push that resulted in a 45-30 lead for the Mastodons at the break.
In a career of "career nights", Konchar had another one. He finished with 29 points and a career-high 14 assists. He also added seven rebounds and three steals. The senior had only one turnover on the night. He was 10-of-11 from the free throw line.
Konchar's 14 assists is the most by a Summit League player this year. It is also a single-game Division I era program record for assists in a game.
Konchar was one of four Mastodons in double-digits on Thursday night. Matt Holba added 22 points. He matched a career high with six 3-pointers. Kason Harrell recorded 15 points and Dee Montgomery totaled 13 points.
The 'Dons improve to 9-0 when Montgomery hits double-digits.
The win is Purdue Fort Wayne's fifth straight. It is the second time this season the 'Dons have won five straight. The Mastodons had 21 assists, hitting the 20-assist mark in a game for the eighth time this season. Purdue Fort Wayne had only seven turnovers. It is the fourth time in five games the 'Dons recorded only single-digit turnovers.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 17-10 (9-3 Summit). Denver falls to 7-19 (2-10 Summit).
The Mastodons travel to Omaha on Saturday (Feb. 16) afternoon. Omaha is tied with South Dakota State for first place in the Summit League.
