Omaha Edges Purdue Fort Wayne 74-71
2/16/2019 9:41:00 PM | Men's Basketball
OMAHA – John Konchar had 20 points but the Purdue Fort Wayne men's basketball squad fell 74-71 at Omaha on Saturday (Feb. 16) evening. The game featured seven ties and seven lead changes.
The first half ended with the Mastodons up 36-31 but the Mavericks held a lead for much of the first 20 minutes. Omaha was up 23-18 with 6:14 on the clock in the first when the 'Dons went on a 16-4 run to take the lead. Konchar had nine of the points. Purdue Fort Wayne went 6-of-7 from the floor in the four-minute stretch.
Omaha didn't hold a lead again until 10:46 remained in the game at 49-48. The Mavericks would go up by as many as 13 points at 68-55 with 6:13 left to cap a 26-7 run. Omaha was 10-of-13 from the floor in the run and made all six 3-point attempts.
That wouldn't be the end of the game, however. Down 10 points a few minutes later, Purdue Fort Wayne scored 11 straight over a three-minute stretch to take a 71-70 lead with 1:42 remaining. The run was punctuated by a 3-pointer by Konchar to put the 'Dons up.
Omaha went down on the other end to score what would end up being the game winning basket. Matt Pile's first attempt was blocked by Konchar, but Pile grabbed the rebound and finished under the basket to make it a 72-71 game. On the next possession, Matt Weir's three was off the mark and Omaha couldn't convert either. The 'Dons called a timeout, down 72-71 and 23 seconds left. Konchar took a three from the top of the arc. It was off the mark and Omaha got a quick basket on the other end to go up 74-71 with nine seconds left. Purdue Fort Wayne took a timeout to setup a shot to try to tie the game. Omaha had only three team fouls at that point, and used a pair in the final seconds to make it tougher for the 'Dons to get a clean look. With less than two seconds remaining Weir had an off balance 3-pointer go off the rim to end the game.
Konchar finished with 20 points, six rebounds and five assists. He was 7-of-11 from the floor. He now has 1,963 career points.
Matt Holba added 17 points. Kason Harrell totaled 12 and Dylan Carl finished with 10. Zach Jackson led the Mavericks with 27 points.
The Mastodons shot 45.6 percent (26-of-57). Omaha finished at 44.9 percent (31-of-69).
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 17-11 (9-4 Summit). Omaha improves to 16-9 (10-2 Summit). The 'Dons hit the road to first place South Dakota State on Thursday (Feb. 21) evening.
