Bing! Konchar To Holba Game Winner Is Déjà Vu For Groundhog Day Win
2/2/2019 11:29:00 PM | Men's Basketball
TULSA, Okla. – Matt Holba's 3-pointer with 4.4 seconds left gave the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons an 82-81 victory over Oral Roberts on Saturday (Feb. 2). It is the second time this season Holba has drained a 3-pointer on a pass from John Konchar to win a game. The first time was Nov. 25 at Cleveland State.
The baseline under Purdue Fort Wayne's basket on Oral Roberts' court says "Expect A Miracle." It wasn't a miracle that opened up Holba for the game winning shot. It was the double team Konchar drew. Once it came Konchar flipped the ball back to an open Holba. Just like the game winner at Cleveland State, Holba drained the shot to give the 'Dons a victory.
Oral Roberts led 79-77 with a minute left on an Emmanuel Nzekwesi layup. Out of a timeout, Konchar drove to the hoop and finished on a tough play to knot the game at 79. Purdue Fort Wayne forced a held ball on Oral Roberts' next possession. But ORU kept the ball and Sam Kearns connected on a jumper with 23 seconds left to put ORU up 81-79. Purdue Fort Wayne brought the ball up court and asked for time. Oral Roberts had a foul to give, and used it quickly. Once the ball was back in play Konchar drove to his left and threw it back to his right to Holba for the game-winner.
ORU had a chance at the end, but Aidan Saunders' rushed shot at the buzzer was no good.
Konchar finished with 26 points, seven assists, a season-high five steals and five rebounds. He was 9-of-14 from the floor and 8-of-8 from the stripe.
Konchar entered the game needing three assists to reach 500 for his career. He did so on a 3-pointer by Marcus DeBerry with 10:44 left in the first half. He is the 13th player in Summit League history to reach 500 assists. Konchar also went over 700 career field goals in the game.
Dylan Carl and Holba each had 14 points. Dee Montgomery pitched in 10 points.
The 'Dons held a lead as large as 15 before Oral Roberts pushed back to knot the game at 77 with 1:35 left.
Kearns had a game-high 27 points for the Golden Eagles.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 15-10 (7-3 Summit League). The 'Dons have won three games in a row. Oral Roberts falls to 8-17 (4-6 Summit League).
The Mastodons return home to host Western Illinois on Thursday at 7 p.m. The game will be played at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
