MUNCIE, Ind. - Pelegrin Vargas had 19 kills for a .444 clip in No. 15 Purdue Fort Wayne's 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-20) win at No. 12 Ball State on Thursday (Feb. 21). This is the first 3-0 victory at Ball State since 2000.
Vargas' 19 kills is the third-most in a three-set match in the NCAA this season.
The junior led the offense throughout the night, with five kills coming in the opening set, including the final point. The Mastodons were down 16-13, but went on a 7-0 run to force two different Ball State timeouts and take the lead for the remainder of the set.
The Cardinals controlled the start of the opening set, jumping out to a 7-2 lead. The 'Dons went on a 7-2 push to even up at 9, but BSU went on to go up 19-13. Purdue Fort Wayne took an 8-1 run to lead 21-20 and not yield the rest of the way. Colton Stone had four kills to complement Vargas' six.
The two squads traded points to a 15-all stymie in the third, but the Mastodons took three straight to force a timeout and take the lead for the remainder of the night. Vargas would not let the Cardinals get within striking distance, as he had eight kills in the third set alone. Stone had six of his 10 digs in the last set.
Kolbie Knorr and Vargas finished with seven digs each. Richie Diedrich had six blocks, accompanying Michael Keegan's four. Keegan had 32 assists. Max Hansen came off the bench to knock in two of the team's three aces.
This is the 'Dons' first win over a team ranked in the AVCA Top 15 Coaches Poll this season, and their first win over Ball State since 2015.
Ball State falls to 7-8, 1-4 MIVA while the Mastodons improve to 9-7, 3-2 MIVA. The 'Dons are back in action on Sunday, March 3, when they host Lindenwood.
