Vargas Has 19 Kills in Five-Set Grinder Win Over Saint Francis
3/16/2019 10:26:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Pelegrin Vargas had six of his 19 kills in the fifth set of No. 13 Purdue Fort Wayne's 3-2 (23-25, 25-21, 25-22, 20-25, 15-13) win over Saint Francis. The junior also chipped in five digs, three blocks, two assists and an ace on Saturday (March 16) to give the Mastodons their fifth win in a row.
The first set went to the Red Flash after a 5-0 start, which included two aces from Cole Thompson. The SFU lead got to 13-6 before the Mastodons started to close the gap. The 'Dons kept it within one on several occasions, including a 24-23 lead for the Red Flash, but did not ever tie the set. Kade Bontrager had five kills and no errors. Kolbie Knorr had his first kill as a Mastodon on an overpass that landed just inside the court.
After taking a 7-6 lead, the Mastodons did not trail in the second set. They held the Red Flash to .091 hitting and used three of the four aces on the night to take the set, including the final point. Michael Keegan's float serve clipped the net and fell straight down onto the Red Flash's side of the court.
The third went back and forth early, but the Mastodons used a 4-0 push to go up 13-10. SFU did not tie the match from then on. Vargas got his fifth kill of the set on the final point.
Saint Francis' offense was clicking in the fourth, as they hit .379 as a team. The 'Dons couldn't do much to stop SFU's 15 kills, but Richie Diedrich did have a solo block.
The decisive fifth set went to the Mastodons behind six kills from Vargas. Tony Price came off the bench to contribute two of his three kills and spark some energy. The 'Dons hit .368 and had 3.5 team blocks to finish off the Red Flash.
Knorr had a match-high 12 digs. Colton Stone did a little bit of everything with eight kills on .333 hitting, while pitching in nine digs and three blocks.
Saint Francis falls to 11-10. The Mastodons are now 13-7 as they resume MIVA play next week with Lewis and Loyola on Thursday and Saturday (March 21 and 23). Saturday's match against Loyola will serve as senior day for the Mastodons' seven seniors: Max Hansen, Price, Keegan, Stone, Alex Dickmann, Austin Neace, and Knorr.
