Late Rally Not Enough For 'Dons to Overcome Flyers

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Despite winning sets three and four on Thursday (March 21), the No. 13 Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team couldn't complete the comeback against No. 7 Lewis. The Flyers took the win 25-23, 25-19, 15-25, 23-25, 15-12.
Pelegrin Vargas did some of everything, as he finished with 22 kills, eight digs and a career-high seven blocks.
The Mastodons held a 16-12 lead in the opening set before Lewis went on a 6-1 run to take its first lead that held to the end of the set. Tony Price and Richie Diedrich both had an ace in the opening frame.
Lewis used a 7-2 run in the second set to go up 22-16 and put it out of reach. Price had five kills on 10 swings in the second.
After Lewis took the first two sets, Frederico Santos and Alex Dickmann came off the bench, moving momentum toward the Mastodons. Santos had a double-double between just sets three and four, notching 29 assists and 11 digs after all was said and done. Dickmann had four kills in the third to pair with Vargas' seven. The 'Dons hit .433 for the set and held Lewis to -.067. A 4-0 start got things going for the 'Dons, but the Flyers answered with four of their own. Purdue Fort Wayne went on a 10-5 push in which Santos had an ace and Tomas Gago had two blocks. After a 16-12 lead for the 'Dons, a 9-3 run capped off by two straight kills from Vargas ended the set.
The fourth set featured 16 ties and three lead changes, as neither team led by more than three. Dickmann and Vargas had six kills each, including two from the former in a 4-0 run that put the 'Dons up three at 21-18. Vargas had the last two Mastodon kills of the set.
Purdue Fort Wayne started the last set off on the right foot, starting off with a 7-5 lead that was enunciated by an ace from Diedrich. Lewis took three straight after a timeout at that point. The 'Dons led 11-10 after a double block from Vargas and Diedrich, but the Flyers showed off their serves down the stretch with two in their 5-1 run to end the match.
The Mastodons' 12.5 team blocks were the most in a match this season. They held the Flyers to .165, which is their second-lowest hitting percentage on the year. This was also the first time that the 'Dons went to five sets with Lewis since 2014. Price had 12 kills and seven digs in his return to the starting lineup. Dickmann finished with 11 kills and a .391 hitting clip. Kolbie Knorr tied his season-high with 14 digs. Gago and Diedrich had six and five blocks, respectively.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 13-8, 5-3 MIVA, while Lewis stays undefeated in conference play at 18-4, 9-0. The Mastodons are back in action on Saturday at 5 p.m. against Loyola. This match will serve as senior night for the seven Mastodon seniors: Max Hansen, Price, Michael Keegan, Colton Stone, Dickmann, Austin Neace, and Knorr.
