3/23/2019 8:17:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - No. 10 Loyola Chicago took down No. 13 Purdue Fort Wayne in four sets (25-21, 24-26, 25-22, 25-22) thanks to .326 hitting on Saturday (March 23). The Mastodons honored their seven senior men's volleyball players before the match for their dedication to the program.
Despite Purdue Fort Wayne jumping out to a 12-4 lead in the opening set, Loyola went on a 17-6 run that put the Ramblers up 21-18. They also closed the set on a 4-1 run. Pelegrin Vargas had six kills on 12 swings.
The Mastodons started the second set 4-1, but the Ramblers responded to even the score at 9. The Mastodons got a 5-1 run put together with a block from Richie Diedrich and Colton Stone and a kill from Diedrich. LUC had a set point opportunity at 24-23, but the 'Dons earned the final three points behind kills from Tony Price and Tomas Gago and an ace from Stone. Stone is now one ace away from moving into the top 10 in program history. The Mastodons are 5-0 in extended sets this season after Saturday's second.
The Ramblers did not trail the third set after going up 12-10 on a 3-0 run. There were 12 ties in the third set alone, however. Vargas had another .500 frame with 6-1-10.
Momentum shifted toward Loyola in the last set, as they earned five of the last six points of the match. Alex Dickmann came off the bench to notch four kills to pair with Vargas' five.
Vargas finished with 21 kills to lead all attackers, paired with Price's 10. Kolbie Knorr led the defense with 11 digs.
The Mastodons fall to 13-9, 5-4 MIVA while Loyola improves to 15-7, 8-2. The Mastodons are back at home for their final regular season home match on Tuesday (March 26) when Ball State comes to town. The match will be broadcast on NCAA Volleyball's Facebook page.
