3/26/2019 9:16:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The No. 15 Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team defeated No. 13 Ball State 3-0 (31-29, 25-22, 25-18) on Tuesday (March 26) on Arnie Ball Court. This is the first time that the Mastodons have beaten Ball State 3-0 in back-to-back matches in program history.
Pelegrin Vargas had 19 kills with a .351 percentage to lead the Mastodon attack. In the extended first set, he had 10. The 'Dons and Cardinals traded leads in the opener, with 10 ties and five lead changes. The Mastodons had a set point opportunity after Vargas had a kill to go up 24-23, but the Cards responded and took a 26-25 lead to have a chance of their own. The 'Dons came in clutch, however, by taking the final three points after going down 29-28. The Mastodons have still not lost an extended set this season. Tomas Gago and Vargas combined for the block that sent the match into the second set.
Vargas stayed hot in the second, smacking down seven more kills. Ball State did not lead after 6-5, but kept it close after a 4-1 push to bring it within one at 21-20. Vargas had a kill in the 4-2 stretch to end the set, but the 'Dons capitalized on two BSU attack errors and a service error.
The third set was all 'Dons, as they never trailed. The offense was more spread around, as Tony Price, Colton Stone and Gago all had three kills each. Max Hansen came off the bench to serve the last point of the match, which the 'Dons won on an out of system set from Richie Diedrich that Vargas put away.
Five different Mastodons had an ace. Michael Keegan finished with 35 assists, six digs, three blocks and two kills.
The Mastodons are now 14-9, 6-4 MIVA, while Ball State falls to 13-12, 4-6 MIVA. Purdue Fort Wayne will hit the road for a pair of matches this weekend at Quincy and Lindenwood on March 29 and 30 at 8 p.m. ET.
