QUINCY, Ill. - No. 15 Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball took a 3-0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-23) win over the Quincy Hawks on Friday night (March 29).
Pelegrin Vargas, Alex Dickmann and Tony Price each did a bit of everything in Pepsi Arena. Vargas had 12 kills with a .429 percentage and six digs. Dickmann had 11 kills on .529 hitting, seven digs and two aces. Price had nine kills, five digs and an ace.
The first set was all Mastodons after they set in. After an 8-all tie, Purdue Fort Wayne went on 17-4 run to end the set. Price picked up his ace on the penultimate point. The 'Dons held Quincy to -.240 hitting, while notching a .348 clip of their own.
In the second, Purdue Fort Wayne held a steady lead throughout, nursing a lead as many six at 22-16. Price had three straight kills on a 4-1 run that gave the Mastodons this advantage. The 'Dons hit .467 for the frame.
Quincy kept the third set close until the end, even answering a 4-0 'Don run by having a 3-0 run of its own. In the Mastodons run, Dickmann had two aces. Purdue Fort Wayne took advantage of late Quincy errors that sealed the match.
The Mastodons improve to 15-9, 7-4 MIVA while Quincy falls to 5-19, 0-11. The 'Dons will have a match with Lindenwood on Saturday (March 30). If Purdue Fort Wayne wins this matchup, it will guarantee a home MIVA tournament quarterfinal match on April 13.
