Mastodons Drop Heartbreaker Despite Out Hitting Boilermakers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team dropped a heartbreaker to its parent school Purdue 5-4 Wednesday night (April 3). The Mastodons out-hit the Boilermakers in the game 6-5.
Lacey Wilzbacher and Lauren Watson led the 'Dons with a pair of hits on the night. Wilzbacher had a triple and a pair of RBIs, while Morganne Denny also drove in two runs.
The Boilermakers started the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first.
In the top of the third, the Mastodons would score all four of their runs with one out. Sydney Windlan started things with a single down the left field line. After Watson reached on an error, Wilzbacher sent a rope down the right field line for a triple, bringing home Watson and Windlan. Alise Hale drew a four-pitch walk to bring Denny to the plate as she promptly delivered a double to right, scoring both runners.
In the bottom half of the third, the Boilermakers got two runs back on a pair of solo home runs, as the 'Dons led 4-3. That is how the score would stay until the bottom of the seventh when the Boilermakers drew a pair of bases loaded walks to end the game.
Shaina Eyre started in the circle and threw four innings in a no decision, allowing three runs on five hits. Lauren McConnell took the loss, tossing the final 2 1-3 innings, as she allowed two runs despite not allowing a hit.
Purdue Fort Wayne returns to the diamond this weekend, April 6-7, for a Summit League series against North Dakota. Sunday's game will be a Pink Out game to benefit the Vera Bradley Foundation.
