FARGO, N.D. – Purdue Fort Wayne saw their run in the 2019 Summit League Softball Championship come to an end on Thursday (May 9) with losses to South Dakota and South Dakota State. The Mastodons nearly rallied from a 6-0 deficit in the second game, ultimately falling to South Dakota State 7-6 with the tying and winning runs on base to close the game.
Game One – South Dakota 5, Purdue Fort Wayne 1
Lauren Watson recorded three hits and Abby Baez knocked her first career home run but the 'Dons fell to South Dakota in the opener.
The Mastodons had chances, leaving seven on base in the contest. But the 'Dons couldn't get the big hit with runners on base.
South Dakota scored single runs in the first three innings to grab a 3-0 lead. Purdue Fort Wayne starter Shaina Eyre struck out five Coyotes in the contest. She went 4.2 innings, giving up five runs (three earned). Alyssa Malicki threw the final 1.1. Dustie Durham went the distance in the circle for the win for the Coyotes.
Game Two – South Dakota State 7, Purdue Fort Wayne 6
The Jackrabbits opened the contest with a six-run first inning. The big hit in the frame was a grand slam by Mallory McQuistan.
However by the time the bottom of the seventh rolled around it was a 7-3 South Dakota State advantage. Just like a day before, the 'Dons went to work in the seventh and loaded the bases with one out. A South Dakota State error scored two runs and suddenly it was a 7-5 game with runners on first and third. Sydney Windlan came to the plate and hit a ball over the centerfield's head. Her double scored Alise Hale and made the score 7-6 with Rachel Everson on third and Windlan on second. Lexi Smalarz followed with an infield single to load the bases with one out. Watson grounded into a fielder's choice at home for the second out of the inning. Lacey Wilzbacher then came up with two outs. On a 3-2 pitch she hit a bouncer to short. Wilzbacher hustled down the line and a bang-bang call at the bag went in favor of South Dakota State to end the game.
The Mastodons out-hit the Jackrabbits 10-7. Watson, Brooke Imel, Windlan and Smalarz each had two hits.
Purdue Fort Wayne's other runs came in the third when the 'Dons put one on the board and then in the fifth when they scored two.
The Mastodons finished the 2019 campaign with a win in the Summit League Championship Tournament for a second consecutive season.
