Mastodons Fourth at Crusader Collegiate After Day One

VALPARAISO, Ind. - Behind a -2 day from Callahan Elzey, Purdue Fort Wayne men's golf finished the first day of the Crusader Collegiate in a tie for fourth place with North Dakota State. The 'Dons shot a 297-287-584 (+8) in two rounds with one more to play tomorrow.
Purdue Fort Wayne finished the first day ahead of three Horizon League teams: IUPUI (600), Green Bay (612) and Detroit Mercy (618). The 'Dons also beat out Summit League foes North Dakota (603) and Western Illinois (603).
Elzey led the way for the Mastodons with an even 72 on the first 18 and a 70 on his second round. He had nine birdies between his two rounds to find himself in a tie for fifth overall.
Burke Pitz shot 70-75-145 in his first collegiate action. On his fourth hole of the day, he earned an eagle two on the 13th hole. He also had five birdies to end his day tied for 15th.
Eric Brinker shot a 79-69-148 for a tie for 25th in the field. Brinker bounced back from his first round with four birdies on his second round for the 69.
One shot back of Brinker, Parker Deakyne finished his day with a 76-73-149. He tied for 33rd overall thanks to six birdies in his two rounds.
Cody White ended day one with an 83-75-158 with three birdies on the day. He had a bogey-free front nine in his second round, placing him in a tie for 72nd place.
Kasey Lilly played as an individual, leading the field of golfers not playing for their team. In a tie for 11th, Lilly shot a 73-71-144 with eight birdies.
Wright State is the team leader for the tournament, with a nine-under 567. Raider Mikkel Mathieson is leading the field with a 166 (-8) thanks to two eagles in his second round.
The Mastodons will be back in action on Tuesday (Sept. 16) with the final round of the Crusader Collegiate with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m.
